Brave New World: The Panopticon Society

Deborah Pierce has an interesting article in the Seattle Press detailing how our society is moving towards the Panopticon as a model.  This is dangerous stuff.  Who decides what is normal?  What happens if today’s definition of normal is tomorrow’s definition of dangerous?

Think it can’t happen here?  Ask Americans of Japanese descent who were living in the United States in 1941.

Bougainville: The folly of banning guns

This article by Dave Kopel, Paul Gallant, and Joanne Eisen in NationalReview online highlights the sheer folly of attempting to ban guns.  The tiny island of Bougainville was blockaded in an attempt to deprive the Bougainville Revolutionary Army (BRA) of arms.  Instead of bringing the revolution to an end, the blockade ended up killing 10% of the island’s population through starvation and disease.  Meanwhile, the BRA have resorted to building their own firearms.  They started simple, with single-shot arms, using parts and ammunition from left-over WWII-era supplies and from WWII-era wrecks.  The BRA is now producing its own copy of the full-auto M16 (the basic infantry rifle of the United States armed forces, which is not available to civilans in the U.S.).

See the story for the full background on these tenacious islanders.

Woman pregnant for 12 months

In an extremely rare condition, an Italian woman gave birth to a girl in December and is expecting triplets in March.  It is believed to be the first case of a woman being pregnant for a full twelve months.

Point to Ponder

Some studies today suggest that Americans are paying 50% or more of their income in taxes each year (federal, state, local, etc)¹

Economist Daniel J. Mitchell observed that: “[Medieval serfs] only had to give the lord of the manor a third of their output and they were considered slaves. So what does that make us?” (Emphais mine.)

Good question.

¹For example, this Cato Institute study from 1998 placed the tax burden at 36%.  However, the study did not take into account property, sales, vehicle, and other taxes that are not witheld from employees’ paychecks.

Odd Occurances: How Embarassing

Or perhaps a better title would be, That Sucks.

A woman ended up stuck to a toilet on an airliner because of the high-pressure vacuum flush system.  See the story in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

The Obligatory About Page

I’ll edit this entry more later for an “about me” page…

The first legal shot has been fired

Six families have filed suit against American and United airlines as well as the companies that were responsible for security at Logan, Dulles, and Newark airports.  The lawyer for the families says that Boeing may be added to the suit.

Maybe there is some liability to go around for the security firms and the airlines (since the firms are hired by the airlines), but I can’t see how Boeing fits into this.  To me it would be like suing Ford because someone maliciously ran over someone else with one of their SUVs.

Here’s the story on CBS News.

Welcome!

I’ve had this site for a while, but I’m just now getting around to setting things up the way I want them.  I intend for this site to be a gathering place for articles and sites that interest me along with occasional commentary.
